About Kybella
Kybella represents a major advance in treating excessive accumulation of fat localized to the area under the jaw which leads to an unflattering appearance or fullness frequently referred to as a “double” chin. A combination of factors often beyond your control leads to this condition. Among the most frequent contributors are aging, genetics and weight gain.
This extremely common situation affects both men and women with up to 7 in 10 adults voicing displeasure with the area under the chin. Even otherwise thin or normal weight individuals suffer from this almost universal problem. People with a "double" chin look older, heavier and tired.
Until recently liposuction or surgery represented the only options to combat these deposits. Kybella, a purified solution of naturally occurring bile acid, received approval by the FDA in early 2015. Injected directly into the submental fat lying on top of the neck muscles, this product dissolves membranes encircling the fat cells which causes the adipocytes to rupture. Naturally occurring processes clear the newly released fat from the body.

Treatment with Kybella is limited to a specific area under the chin roughly bordered by the bone known as the mandible. A special grid properly positioned in this area specifies the exact location for every injection. During each session anywhere between 10 – 30 small areas will be targeted with tiny quantities of Kybella.
At present, Kybella is only licensed for reduction of unwanted accumulations of fat in the submental area. It is not intended to remove excessive skin.
Painless Treatment
Topical numbing salve and ice packs applied to the area blunt the minor sensation even from xylocaine injection into the treatment zone.
Any discomfort after the session may be relieved with Tylenol.
Performed By Dr. Landow
In our office, only Dr. Ken Landow performs the injections. He also applies the grid, identifies the specific sites and injects the xylocaine.
Kybella FAQs
Treatment with Kybella is limited to a specific area under the chin roughly bordered by the bone known as the mandible. A special grid properly positioned in this area specifies the exact location for every injection. During each session anywhere between 10 – 50 small areas will be targeted with tiny quantities of Kybella.
At present Kybella is only licensed for reduction of unwanted accumulations of fat in the submental area. It is not intended to remove excessive skin.
In studies of several thousand individuals, Kybella proved to be remarkably safe when proper guidelines were followed. It must be injected only in "approved" sites in order to avoid nerves and other import structures in the area. Of course Kybella is a prescription medicine only to be injected by an individual with proper credentials such as Dr. Ken Landow.
Obviously it takes awhile after therapy for the fat cells to disappear and for the skin to return to a more cosmetically attractive position. Depending on the initial appearance most people see marked improvement between the second and fourth session. Estimates suggest about 30% note significant benefit after two treatments with the number rising to more than 50% after the fourth.
For those with more moderate fat depots, only two to four sessions will be necessary. Overall more than 75% of people express satisfaction with this non-surgical approach.
